Law of the Instrument

Overuse of a familiar tool can stifle creative problem-solving.

Definition

The Law of the Instrument, also known as Maslow's Hammer, suggests that people tend to over-rely on familiar tools or methods, even when they are not the most effective. This can limit creative problem-solving and prevent exploration of more efficient solutions.

Do

  • Encourage exploration of different tools or methods
  • Design systems to expose users to a variety of solutions
  • Provide clear incentives for users to try out new tools

Avoid

  • Do not limit users to a single method or tool
  • Avoid designing systems that solely reinforce familiar methods
  • Do not discourage experimentation or exploration

When to apply

  • When a user has a preferred tool or method they use constantly
  • When there are multiple solutions to a problem but the user defaults to a known method
  • When a user remains within their comfort zone instead of exploring new options
