Signifiers

Guide users with visual or textual cues to interact with interface elements effectively.

Definition

Signifiers are intuitive symbols, text, or other visual elements that provide guidance on how to interact with different components of a user interface. They are essential in helping users understand how to navigate and use an application or website without explicit instruction.

Do

  • Ensure signifiers are intuitive and easy to understand
  • Use established symbols or icons as signifiers for common actions
  • Place signifiers close to the element they are signifying

Avoid

  • Avoid overloading the interface with too many signifiers
  • Don't use abstract or unfamiliar symbols as signifiers
  • Don't place signifiers too far from the element they're related to

When to apply

  • Designing a new user interface
  • Adding new features to an existing interface
  • Improving user experience on a platform
