Curse of Knowledge

Avoid assuming users know as much about your product as you do.

Definition

The Curse of Knowledge is a cognitive bias where designers, due to their own deep knowledge of a product, overestimate the level of understanding or knowledge of their users. This can lead to confusion and usability issues as users may not understand the product as intuitively.

Do

  • Conduct user testing to understand users' knowledge level
  • Involve users in the design process
  • Create intuitive, user-friendly designs

Avoid

  • Assume users have the same understanding as you
  • Overcomplicate the design
  • Neglect user feedback or testing

When to apply

  • Designing user interfaces
  • Creating user instructions or guides
  • Developing new features or services
